Lichen is one of the tougher things to deal with on a wood deck. It bonds tightly to the surface, works its way into the grain, and plain pressure washing usually isn't enough - and can actually do more harm than good if you're not careful with wood.
This deck in Nashville, IN had a heavy coating of algae and lichen built up over years of exposure. The wood was dark, discolored, and the grain was barely visible under all of it. That kind of buildup doesn't just look bad - it holds moisture against the wood and speeds up deterioration over time.
We used a specialized wood cleaning solution formulated specifically for wood surfaces. Not a generic cleaner, not straight bleach. A product designed to break down organic growth and pull years of grime out of the wood fibers without stripping or damaging them. That distinction matters a lot when you're working with aged wood that still has good structural integrity.
The difference is pretty striking. The warm, rich tones of the wood grain came back completely. The rail caps, the deck boards, the balusters - all of it cleaned up well and the wood looks healthy again. That's what the right product and the right process gets you.
A lot of decks that look like they need to be replaced really just need a proper cleaning. If yours has gone gray and green and you're not sure what to do with it, this is exactly the kind of work we do.
